Ode on Melancholy কবিতায় Keats দেখিয়েছেন যে দুঃখ বা বিষণ্ণতার সঙ্গে লড়াই নয়, বরং তা গ্রহণ করা উচিত। কবি বলেন, জীবনেই আনন্দ ক্ষণস্থায়ী এবং দুঃখের সঙ্গে মিলিত। আমরা আনন্দকে তার পূর্ণ মূল্য দিতে চাইলে, দুঃখকেও বুঝতে হবে।

দুঃখ এবং আনন্দ একে অপরের পরিপূরক। Keats আমাদের শেখান যে, দুঃখকে স্বীকার করা মানে জীবনের সৌন্দর্য এবং সময়ের মূল্য বোঝা।

John Keats এর "Ode on Melancholy" কবিতার opening line হলো “No, no, go not to Lethe…”। এখানে তিনি পাঠককে শুরুতেই একটি সতর্কবার্তা দেন, আর এর পেছনে রয়েছে গ্রিক পুরাণের ধারণা।

• Lethe হলো Greek mythology তে underworld এর একটি river, যাকে বলা হয় river of forgetfulness, যেখানে আত্মারা সবকিছু ভুলে যায়।

• কবি শুরুতেই বলেন, “go not to Lethe”, অর্থাৎ দুঃখ ভুলে যেতে বা oblivion খুঁজতে যেও না।

• Keats বোঝাতে চেয়েছেন, sorrow কে numb করে দেওয়া উচিত নয়, কারণ দুঃখকে উপেক্ষা করলে জীবনের আসল গভীরতা ধরা যায় না।

• কবিতার central idea হলো এক ধরনের paradox: মানুষকে তার melancholy (sadness) পুরোপুরি অনুভব করতে হবে, কারণ এই দুঃখের ভেতর দিয়েই বোঝা যায় beauty এবং joy এর প্রকৃত মূল্য।
