Literary Terms বলতে বোঝায় সাহিত্য বিশ্লেষণের জন্য ব্যবহৃত সব ধরনের ধারণা, ধারা, কৌশল ও গঠন (যেমন— Allegory, Tragedy, Catharsis, Stream of Consciousness)। এগুলো সাহিত্য বোঝা ও বিশ্লেষণের বৃহত্তর কাঠামো। অন্যদিকে Figures of Speech হলো ভাষার অলংকার বা সাজসজ্জা, যা বাক্যকে সুন্দর ও শিল্পসম্মত করে তোলে (যেমন— Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Personification, Hyperbole ইত্যাদি)। অর্থাৎ সব Figures of Speech হলো Literary Terms, কিন্তু সব Literary Terms Figures of Speech নয়। সহজভাবে বললে, Literary Terms সাহিত্যকর্মের পুরো বিশ্লেষণকে নির্দেশ করে, কিন্তু Figures of Speech শুধু ভাষার সৌন্দর্য বৃদ্ধি করে। তাই এদের মধ্যে মূল পার্থক্য হলো ব্যাপ্তি ও কার্যকারিতায়।
