কোলরিজ নিজেই বলেছেন যে আফিম খাওয়ার পর ঘুমের মধ্যে তিনি স্বপ্নে এই দৃশ্যগুলো দেখেছিলেন। জেগে উঠে তিনি লিখতে শুরু করেন কিন্তু কেউ তাকে বিরক্ত করলে কবিতাটি অসম্পূর্ণ থেকে যায়। তাই Kubla Khan–কে dream vision বলা হয়। এটি মানুষের কল্পনা, স্বপ্ন ও অবচেতন মানসিক অভিজ্ঞতার এক অনন্য শিল্পরূপ।
