বহুবচন রূপের বিশেষ

সাধারণত, ইংরেজিতে noun-এর plural (বহুবচন) করতে আমরা সাধারণত -s বা -es যোগ করি। কিন্তু কিছু শব্দের ক্ষেত্রে, শব্দের ভিতরের vowel বা consonant পরিবর্তন করে plural তৈরি করতে হয়।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ:

• Louse (উকুন) → Lice

• Ox (গরু) → Oxen

• Brother (ভাই) → Brethren

• Child (শিশু) → Children

এ ধরনের বহুবচনকে বলা হয় irregular plural nouns। অর্থাৎ, এগুলো নিয়মমাফিক -s/-es যোগ করে তৈরি হয় না। ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণে এই irregular plural-এর ব্যাখ্যা পাওয়া যায় [Oxford English Dictionary, Grammar Section] অনুযায়ী।

মূল বিষয়: যখন কোনো noun-এর বহুবচন স্বাভাবিক নিয়ম অনুসারে না হয় এবং ভেতরের অক্ষর বা শব্দের গঠন পরিবর্তিত হয়, তখন সেটি irregular plural হিসেবে ধরা হয়।

Conversion: Simple ↔ Complex Sentence

• Rule:

  • Simple sentence-এ In spite of / Despite থাকলে, complex sentence করতে হলে Though / Although ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

  • Conversely, complex sentence-এ Though / Although থাকলে simple sentence করতে হলে In spite of / Despite ব্যবহার হবে।

1. Though he is lazy, he fails the exam. ❌

   • অর্থ আলাদা (pass ≠ fail)

2. Although he laziness, he passed the exam. ❌

   • ব্যাকরণগত ভুল; “laziness” noun, subject + verb দরকার

3. Despite he was lazy, he passed the exam. ❌

   • Despite এর পর noun, pronoun বা gerund থাকা উচিত; clause হলে Despite the fact that বা Although ব্যবহার করতে হবে

Memorandum (Singular)

• English meaning: a memo; an official note from one person to another within the same organization.

• Bangla meaning: স্মারক

• Plural form: memorandums or memoranda

• Examples:

  1. Michael Davis has prepared a memorandum outlining our need for an additional warehouse.
