The Modern Period: 

  • 1901 থেকে 1939 পর্যন্ত সময়কালকে ইংরেজী সাহিত্যে the Modern Age হিসেবে ধরা হয়ে থাকে।
  • 1901 সালে Queen Victoria এর মৃত্যুর মধ্য দিয়ে এই যুগ এর সুচনা হয় এবং 1939 এ দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সূচনার মধ্য দিয়ে এই যুগ এর সমাপ্তি হয়।

  • It includes many art forms that flourished in European countries including England.

  • The Edwardian period: 1901-1910. 
  • The Georgian period: 1910-193.

• English Literature Periods and their sub-ages: 

1. The Old English Period (450 -1066).

2. The Middle English Period (1066 -1500).

i) The Anglo-Norman Period.

ii) The Age of Chaucer.


3. The Renaissance Period (1500 -1660),

i) Elizabethan Period (1558-1603),

ii) Jacobean Period (1603-1625),

iii) Caroline Period (1625-1649) and

iv) Commonwealth Period (1649-1660).


4. The Neoclassical Period (1660 -1785),

i) The Restoration Period (1660-1700),

ii) The Augustan Period (1700-1745) and

iii) The Age of Sensibility (1745-1785/1798).


5. The Romantic Period (1798 -1832).


6. The Victorian Period (1832 -1901),

i) The Pre-Raphaelites: (1848-1860),

ii) Aestheticism & Decadence: (1880-1901).


7. The Modern Period (1901 -1939),

• The Modern Period (1901-1939) is divided into two shorter periods.

1. The Edwardian Period (1901-1910),

2. The Georgian Period (1910-1939),

- The Modern English period was one of the most significant literary periods.


8. Present: The Post-Modern Period (1939 ).
