The Modern Period: 

• 1901 থেকে 1939 পর্যন্ত সময়কালকে ইংরেজী সাহিত্যে the Modern Age হিসেবে ধরা হয়ে থাকে।
• 1901 সালে Queen Victoria এর মৃত্যুর মধ্য দিয়ে এই যুগ এর সুচনা হয় এবং 1939 এ দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সূচনার মধ্য দিয়ে এই যুগ এর সমাপ্তি হয়।
• Modernism is more than a literary phenomenon.
• It includes many art forms that flourished in European countries including England.

Modern period দুটি ছোট সময়কালে বিভক্ত। যেমন:

• The Edwardian period: 1901-1910. 
• The Georgian period: 1910-193.

• English Literature Periods and their sub-ages: 

1. The Old English Period (450 -1066).

2. The Middle English Period (1066 -1500).

i) The Anglo-Norman Period.

ii) The Age of Chaucer.

3. The Renaissance Period (1500 -1660),

i) Elizabethan Period (1558-1603),

ii) Jacobean Period (1603-1625),

iii) Caroline Period (1625-1649) and

iv) Commonwealth Period (1649-1660).

4. The Neoclassical Period (1660 -1785),

i) The Restoration Period (1660-1700),

ii) The Augustan Period (1700-1745) and

iii) The Age of Sensibility (1745-1785/1798).

5. The Romantic Period (1798 -1832).

6. The Victorian Period (1832 -1901),

i) The Pre-Raphaelites: (1848-1860),

ii) Aestheticism & Decadence: (1880-1901).

7. The Modern Period (1901 -1939),

• The Modern Period (1901-1939) is divided into two shorter periods.

1. The Edwardian Period (1901-1910),

2. The Georgian Period (1910-1939),

Sidney বিশ্বাস করতেন যে কবিতা দর্শন (philosophy) এবং ইতিহাসের চেয়ে বেশি ভালো শেখায়। কারণ দর্শন অনেক সময় কঠিন এবং Abstract (ধারণাগত) হয়, যা সাধারণ মানুষ বুঝতে পারে না। ইতিহাস শুধু সত্য ঘটনা বলে, কিন্তু ভালো বা খারাপ আচরণের স্পষ্ট শিক্ষা দেয় না। তবে কবিতা গল্প এবং চরিত্রের মাধ্যমে সহজে এবং ভালোভাবে শিক্ষা দেয়। কবিতা মানুষকে ভালো হতে এবং বদলাতে সাহায্য করে, যা দর্শন এবং ইতিহাস একসাথে করতে পারে না। তাই Sidney-এর মতে, কবিতা দর্শন এবং ইতিহাসের চেয়ে ভালো শিক্ষাদান করে।

গ্রিক শব্দ Poietes এর অর্থ হলো maker বা নির্মাতা। Sidney বলেছেন, কবিকে "maker" বলা হয় কারণ কবিরা প্রকৃতিকে কপি করে না, বরং তারা কল্পনাশক্তি ব্যবহার করে একটি নতুন এবং উন্নত জগৎ তৈরি করে। এই শব্দটি কবিদের সৃজনশীলতার গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে ব্যবহার করা হয়। অন্যদিকে, Poiesis হলো সৃষ্টি বা তৈরি করার প্রক্রিয়া, কিন্তু "maker" শব্দটির জন্য Poietes সঠিক। তাই এখানে Poietes শব্দটি কবির সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত।
