King Lear – Opening Scene and Cordelia’s Disownment

• Context: Lear demands that his three daughters publicly declare their love for him.

• Goneril and Regan: Give elaborate, flattering speeches to win his favor.

• Cordelia: Refuses to participate in the dishonest display.

  • Her response: "Nothing, my lord."

  • She explains she loves him truly and appropriately: "according to my bond; no more nor less."

• Outcome: Lear, perceiving this as a lack of affection, disowns Cordelia and banishes her from the kingdom without a dowry.
