Lady Macbeth’s Death and Macbeth’s Soliloquy – Act 5, Scene 5

• Characters:

  • Seyton – Macbeth’s loyal chief servant and attendant

• Event:

  • While preparing for the final battle against the invading English and Scottish forces, a cry is heard from within the castle.

  • Macbeth asks about the noise. Seyton enters and delivers the grim news:
    "The queen, my lord, is dead."

• Significance:

  • This news delivers the final blow to Macbeth’s spirit.

  • Macbeth responds with his famous soliloquy:
    "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow..."

  • In the soliloquy, he expresses despair and reflects on the meaninglessness of life.

Shakespeare composed much of his plays in Iambic pentameter.

Iambic Pentameter
- A rhythmic Pattern. Pentameter means a group or unit of five people or five things. 

• William Shakespeare:
