Let the side of the garden = x meters.

Then, the side of the garden including the path = x + (2 × 2)

= x + 4 meters.

Area of path = Area of garden with path - Area of garden

⇒ 48 = (x + 4)2 - x2

​⇒ 48 = x2 + 8x + 16 - x2

​⇒ 8x + 16 = 48

⇒ 8x = 48 - 16

⇒ x = 32/8

∴ x = 4 meters

∴ Therefore, side length of the garden is 4 meters.
