বাক্য “None but the brave deserve the fair”–এ but শব্দটির কাজ হলো “except” বোঝানো, অর্থাৎ সাহসী ছাড়া কেউ সুন্দরী পাওয়ার যোগ্য নয়। এখানে but = except হলে এটি Preposition হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

ইংরেজিতে but শব্দটি বিভিন্ন parts of speech হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে:

• But (Pronoun): Nobody but has his fault.
  এখানে but অর্থে “that not” বা “who not” ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

• But (Preposition): No one there but me.
  অর্থ: আমি ছাড়া ওখানে আর কেউ ছিল না। এখানে but = except; apart from; other than।

• But (Adverb): You can but request.
  English অর্থ: only; no more than
  Bangla অর্থ: শুধু; কেবল; মাত্র
  অর্থাৎ মাত্র বা কেবল বোঝাতে but adverb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

• But (Noun): But me no buts.
  এখানে buts অর্থ: কোনো আপত্তি বা যুক্তি (an objection; an argument against something)।

• But (Verb): But me no buts.
  প্রথম But টি verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে, কারণ এটি imperative sentence–এর শুরুতে। অর্থ: কোনো আপত্তি করা বা ‘কিন্তু’ বলা বন্ধ করতে নির্দেশ দেওয়া।

The correct answer is - ঘ) She agreed that the poor should be helped. 

• Agree/ be anxious/arrange/determine/ be determined/ decide/demand + infinitive + object যুক্ত Active voice কে passive করার নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত Active voice এর subject ও verb বসে।
- that বসে।
- infinitive এর পরের Object (direct object) বসে।
- should be বসে।
- infinitive এর পরের verb এর past participle বসে।

- Active: She agreed to help the poor.

ক) She agreed the poor to help.
- এই বাক্যটি grammatically ভুল।
- "agree" এর পরে এইভাবে noun + infinitive বসে না। অর্থ অস্পষ্ট।

 খ) She agreed the poor to be helped.
- এই structure সাধারণত "want", "allow", "expect" ইত্যাদি verb-এর পরে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- "agree" verb এর সঙ্গে এভাবে ব্যবহার করা যায় না। Structure-wise ভুল।

গ) The poor was agreed to be helped by her.
"Agree" একটি intransitive verb, agree ক্রিয়া passive voice-এ ব্যক্তিগত ইচ্ছা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয় না।।
"Was agreed" বলাটা grammar অনুযায়ী ভুল।

• The jury (বিচারকমণ্ডলী) হলো একটি collective noun

• সাধারণত collective noun-এর ক্ষেত্রে verb এবং pronoun উভয়ই singular হয়
