Irony হলো এমন একটি প্রকাশ বা বক্তব্য যেখানে প্রকৃত অর্থ আড়ালে থাকে বা উল্টোভাবে প্রকাশ করা হয়। এটি প্রায়শই বক্তব্যকে আরও শক্তিশালী করার জন্য ব্যবহার করা হয়, যেখানে প্রকাশিত অর্থের বিপরীত অর্থই বোঝানো হয়।

Irony

• এটি এমন একটি statement, situation বা action, যার আংশিক বা পুরো অর্থ সরাসরি বোঝানো কথার বিপরীত।

• অনেক সময় প্রশংসার আড়ালে নিন্দা বা নিন্দার আড়ালে প্রশংসা প্রকাশ করা হয়।

• সহজভাবে বললে, এটি এমন বক্তব্য যা যা বলা হচ্ছে তার বিপরীত অর্থ বোঝায়।

উদাহরণ

• Jane Austen-এর Pride and Prejudice নাটকের প্রথম বাক্য:
  “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

• Samuel Coleridge-এর Rime of the Ancient Mariner-এও দেখা যায়: নাবিক তৃষ্ণার্ত হয়ে মারা যাচ্ছে অথচ চারপাশে পানি।
