ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণে সাধারণত to-এর পর verb-এর base form (infinitive) ব্যবহৃত হয়, যেমন: to go, to eat, to play ইত্যাদি। কিন্তু কিছু বিশেষ শব্দগুচ্ছ বা expressions-এর পর verb + ing ব্যবহৃত হয়। এই ব্যতিক্রমগুলো মূলত prepositional “to” বহন করে, infinitive “to” নয়। ফলে এর পরে verb-এর gerund form (verb + ing) বসে।

এই ধরনের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দগুচ্ছগুলো হলো—

উদাহরণ:
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
এখানে to hearing ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে কারণ look forward to একটি prepositional phrase, যেখানে “to” preposition হিসেবে কাজ করছে, তাই এর পর verb-এর gerund form (hearing) বসেছে।

Plural of 'Terminus' হলো Termini।

Gerund

• Gerund হলো এমন একটি শব্দ যা ক্রিয়া (Verb) + ing হয়ে তৈরি হয় এবং noun-এর কাজ করে।

• সহজভাবে বলতে গেলে:
  Gerund = Verb + ing = Noun

• Gerund সাধারণত বাক্যে noun-এর স্থানে আসে, যেমন subject, object বা complement।

উদাহরণ:

• I like dancing. → এখানে 'dancing' হলো Gerund এবং object হিসেবে কাজ করছে।

• Reading books is my hobby. → 'Reading books' subject হিসেবে কাজ করছে।

• Working in the morning is good for your health. → 'Working in the morning' একটি noun phrase, যা subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত।

• Reading is an excellent habit. → 'Reading' subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার হয়েছে।
