Usage of Wish/Fancy:

• When a sentence begins with I wish, the following clause uses the past form of the verb or could + base form of the verb.

• To express desire or imagination, after wish, the to be verb is used as were.

More examples:

• I wish I sang a sweet song.

• I wish I were back home in Sylhet.

• I wish I were a king.

সঠিক বাক্য হলো Neither the chairman nor the members were present yesterday. এখানে “Neither --- nor” Co-relative Conjunction হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে, যা দুটি উপাদানের মধ্যে নেতিবাচক সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করে। নিচে বিস্তারিত ব্যাখ্যা দেওয়া হলো।

• Neither --- nor ব্যবহারের নিয়ম

  • যখন দুটি Noun/Pronoun যুক্ত হয়, তখন Verb নির্ভর করে শেষের Noun/Pronoun এর ওপর।

  • উদাহরণে শেষের Noun হলো the members (plural), তাই Verb হলো were।

• Structure:

  1. [Either/Neither] + singular noun + [or/nor] + singular noun + singular verb

     • উদাহরণ: Neither the salesmen nor the marketing manager is in favor of the system.

  2. [Either/Neither] + singular/plural noun + [or/nor] + plural noun + plural verb

     • উদাহরণ: Neither John nor his friends are going to the beach today.

• ভুল অপশনগুলো:

  • (খ) Neither the chairman nor the members are present yesterday.

    • ভুল কারণ yesterday নির্দেশ করছে Past Tense, তাই are নয়, were হবে।

  • (গ) Not the chairman definitely nor the members are present.

    • ভুল কারণ "Nor" ব্যবহার করলে বাক্যের শুরুতে অবশ্যই Neither বসতে হবে।

  • (ঘ) Neither the chairman or the members are present.

    • ভুল কারণ Neither এর সাথে or নয়, nor ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

উপন্যাসের প্রথম লাইন—“It is a truth universally acknowledged…”—অত্যন্ত বিখ্যাত। এতে Austen বিদ্রূপ করে বলেন ধনী পুরুষরা স্ত্রী খুঁজছে। আসলে বাস্তবতা হলো পরিবারগুলো ধনী পুরুষদের খুঁজছে। এই উক্তি Austen-এর satire ও irony-এর শ্রেষ্ঠ উদাহরণ। এটি সমাজের ভণ্ডামি প্রকাশ করে।
